DAVID LOADES writes:

I have been a member of the Navy Record Society for about twelve years and have served as both councillor and Vice-President. For many years I have served as Chairman of the Publications Committee whose job it is to scutinise every proposal made for a Society Publication.

My interest in the Society originated at University of Wales, Bangor where I ran a special subject on the Tudor Navy as part of a maritime history and archaeology programme. The research which resulted was published in 1992 as The Tudor Navy: an administrative, political and military history (Scolar Press), the object of which was to show how the navy fitted in to the structure and functions of the Tudor State. Since then, I also contributed to the Society's Centenary volume (1993) and have collabrorated with Dr. C. S. Knighton in an edition of The Anthony Roll of Henry VIII (NRS, 2000).

Dr. Knighton and I are also presently collaborating on another project to publish a collection of documents on the Elizabethan navy based partly on the Quarter Books of Accounts among the Rawlinson MSS in the Bodleian Library, and partly on documents from the Pepys Collection at Magdalene College, Cambridge. We are discussing a similar but smaller collection on the navy of Edward VI as a contribution to a future Naval Miscellany.

I have also contributed to The Oxford Illustrated History of the Navy (OUP) 'though that is not connected to the NRS. I am also on the Committee involved with the Tudor wreck being investigated off Alderney.
